Class of 2015 Guidance Discussion

Recently, the Junior counselors, Mrs. Donahue and Mrs. Payne, visited the Junior English classrooms to talk to students about a few issues that pertain to them.  We discussed the importance of attending college admissions representative visit at DR during the school day, going out on college campus tours (excused absence form in guidance), taking the PSATs (only offered once on October 19 at DR, costs $25 cash only to be handed in to Mrs. Shillan in Guidance. Students will receive a practice booklet when they register for the test) and the SATs (registration information available on www.collegeboard.org).

We also reminded students that junior year is one of their most important years on a transcript.  Students can check their grades on X2 Parent Portal.  By being proactive and checking their grades frequently, students can assess if they need to make up work if something is missing, stay after school for extra help with their teacher, and/or attend the homework club on Tuesdays and Thursday afternoons in the Media Center.

Last year, Juniors were re-introduced to Naviance (our college search and application process software) and completed a Career Interest Inventory.   https://connection.naviance.com/family-connection/auth/login/?hsid=drrhs
This year, we will be introducing the college search function in Naviance.  Students are encouraged to sign into Naviance now to explore the college options.  In addition, we would like juniors to take the "Game Plan" survey, which is located on the "About Me" tab in Naviance.  The results of the survey will enable students and their counselor to plan ahead and will help with facilitating the college application process.  Guidance will be hosting a college planning night for parents and students in March to go over the entire post secondary planning timeline.

Counselors have reminded students of the importance of getting involved in sports, clubs, activities, community service, part-time job, etc.  It's not too late to join a club/activity, winter or spring sport.  Please go to www.drregional.org (high school tab) and on the left select Activities and Athletics, you will find all the contact information for all our clubs, activities and sports teams.  It's time to build your resume, get involved and show your school spirit!
