ASVAB Career Exploration Program

DRRHS will be administering the ASVAB assessment instrument, which is part of the ASVAB Career Exploration Program (CEP) on February 4th at 8am.  This test is an invaluable tool to help your student with his/her future educational and career plans.

The ASVAB CEP will help your student:
  •  To learn more about themselves and the world of work
  • Explore occupations in line with their interests and skills
  • Develop an effective strategy to realize their career and educational goals

The ASVAB CEP’s website: www.asvabprogram.com offers great information regarding the program and includes a brief summary video explaining the benefits of the program.

This Week and Vacation Ahead!

We hope everyone has a safe and restful Holiday Season.  When we return from winter break, we will begin preparations for our midterms.  This year we are looking to pilot a new midterm schedule format.  Last year, we raised the midterm average to 10% for a students total grade to reflect the importance of midterms.  Since their was more weight assigned to their assessment, we wanted to give students time to prepare.  Given that over 60% of our students are involved in extracurricular activities we wanted to create a schedule that benefited student achievement.   This new schedule allows students an opportunity to study after their obligations (sports, extracurricular's, work, etc) and to sleep in later to ensure they are rested for exams. Since so many of our students are here after school, we will have lunch scheduled.  A late start for students, also gives teachers an opportunity to collaborate during the morning sessions for common grading practices on assessments.

Take a look at the proposed schedule below and please provide your feedback on this survey

The Guidance Counselors of the junior class began the future planning presentations this past week and will continue after the holiday break.  Students were introduced to the guidance curriculum on Naviance, which included the Game Plan, Brag Sheet, Career/Occupational Research, Creating a Resume, College Search, and developing a list of "Colleges I'm Thinking About".  Juniors were given a packet of information, were encouraged to share their Naviance portfolio with their parents, and to continue working on the above tasks at home.  Students were also encouraged to go onto college websites and set up individual college tours directly on the colleges' admissions page. Juniors were reminded that they are allowed 3 excused absences if the college visit form is completed (copy of the form can be found in their packet)." Presentations will continue after vacation, followed by individual meetings with guidance counselors. The PowerPoint will be available once all presentations have been completed, and in March parents will be invited to learn more about the process at our annual Future Planning Night.

Today we received a letter from Ms. Joanne Storrs from Pride.  In the letter (pictured below) Ms. Storrs wanted to, "Pay honor to your boys soccer team for continuing to give back to their community." Great work Coach Kulpa, Coach Augusto, and the Boys Soccer team.  Continue to make us proud!

This Week & The Week Ahead

This week we concluded our Holiday Giving Project, where we collect over 300 items (clothes, gifts for children, etc) for families in our local community.  This year's gifts beat our last year’s donations and we appreciate the support from our students, staff, and community members for their generosity.
The Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education have re-vamped the nomination process for the Massachusetts Teacher of the Year.  This year, it is easier for parents, students, or staff members to nominate a teacher for this prestigious award.  If you know a teacher who truly exemplifies the “D-R Difference” and would like to nominate him/her, please click here to submit your nomination.
On Tuesday, December 23rd, Dighton-Rehoboth Regional High School will say farewell to Mrs. Jane Hunt after 33 years of DR service.  Mrs. Hunt is a Special Education teacher who has worked in several different teaching models.  She is going to be missed by students, staff, and our community.  We wish her the best in retirement as she enters a new chapter in her life.  Some say that "Retirement only means that it is time for a new adventure."  Good luck and you will be truly missed.
On Saturday December 20th, the Massachusetts Youth Council was hosted at the Dighton-Rehoboth Regional High School Media Center.  State Representative Joseph Kennedy is producing a TV segment called "Conversation with the Congressman" where members of the Youth Council interview the Congressman about topics of their choice.

Senior Rebekah Phillip, State Representative Joseph Kenndy, and senior Brendan Henrique.

In the Classroom:

Mr. Schifone's sculpture classes had a contest to see who could make the best gingerbread house. As you can see both classes outdid themselves and unlike other materials used in sculpture, they got to eat the results.

This week was the start of our winter season.  Here is a recap of this week’s sports events:
·         Girls Basketball: won their season opener in Bourne 64-48. Coach Pacheco stated how impressed he was with the level of effort from his team.
·         Boys Basketball: hosted their season opener against Bourne and lost.  Click here to see some great pictures from opening night.
·         Hockey: D-R/Seekonk bolstered by strong second period carries into a 5-1 win over Norton.
·         Track: The boys and girls winter track teams both began their season with wins over Seekonk, Case, and, Bourne. This 3-0 start earned DR a tie for first place in the SCC.
The defending champion boys were led by Alex Goss, Mat Goss, and Matt Kucia who dominated the sprinting events. Meanwhile, the girls were led by SCC all-star Mia Rogers who ran a blistering pace in the two mile to begin her season. The DR girls were also buoyed by strong performances from sophomores Kylie Fletcher in the dash and Sophia Burrows in the shot put.
The SCC leading falcons will next compete this Saturday at New Bedford Voke for the SCC holiday relays.
·         WrestlingLast Saturday [12/13] the wrestling team had a quad meet at North Attleboro. Their first match was against North Attleboro-which they were defeated by a score of 69 to 3. The lone win was garnered by Tom Ranley at the 120 pound weight class.
Next they bounced back and defeated Pathfinder high school [Western mass] by a score of 42 to 34. Notable wins were picked up by freshman 220 pound wrestler Willie Perreira and sophomore 132 pounder Cody Sanford.
              - Youth Wrestling: On Sunday Dec 14- the DR youth wrestling team posted its first meet against Norton Middle School.  Young grapplers started off with a joint practice from 9:30- 11:00 am then a certified HS Referee took over to have the guys match up. Good times and good experience had by all. High school wrestlers Chris Tito, Tom Ranley, and Katie Travis helped out with the games. Any Dighton Rehoboth resident that might be interested in joining- there is still time -contact Coach Lovejoy at SLovejoy@drregional.org
·         SwimmingThis year, the DR Swim Team and swim teams from Seekonk, Apponequet, and Old Rochester have established a brand new SCC swim league. Under the coaching staff of Bob Hassan and Dave Wyrostek and along with the leadership of captains Jon Eddy, Bryan Tran, Sam Brown, and Meaghan O'Connell, this 100% parent-funded team has been working hard to prepare for the season. With 10 freshmen on the 26 member team, lots of talent is developing for this season and for the future!

In the first meet against Seekonk on December 18, our boys started off with a strong showing by beating Seekonk 92 to 83. New DR school records were set by set by Bryan Tran, Dustin Kindberg, Jeffrey Tran, and Jon Eddy in the 200 Medley Relay, Bryan Abbott, Owen Conti, Dustin Kindberg, and Xavier Byrnes in the 200 Freestyle Relay, and Jeffrey Tran in the 100 Butterfly. The DR girls were overpowered by a larger Seekonk team, but still managed to set a new school record in the 400 Freestyle Relay with Kaitlyn O'Connor, Sara Enos, Meaghan O'Connell, and Megan Alves. In addition, many personal records were either established or broken by both boys and girls. Congratulations to all swimmers!

Winter Concert:   On Wednesday our music department led by Mrs. Voccio, worked with 3 groups: Chorus, Pro Musica, and Symphonic Band students as they performed in the Winter Concert

Mrs. Voccio would like to thank all of the volunteers who helped with concessions, programs, and the raffle at our Winter Concert this past Wednesday, as well as all of the families who donated items for the concession stand, made a donation for our piano fund, or participated in our raffle.  Special thanks to "Grammy" Traficante (grandmother of band member Cody Roy), who donated her raffle winnings to our fund.  Mrs. Voccio, Mr. Botelho, and the students of the music department thank you, and wish you all a wonderful holiday!
