This Week and The Week Ahead

Remembering September 11th:
It has been fourteen years since Al Qaeda attacked the United States of America (New York City, Washington DC, Flight 93 in Shanksville, PA).  Most of our students currently attending Dighton-Rehoboth only remember the aftermath.  As we enjoy this day, we ask that you remember the innocent individuals who lost their lives during these vicious attacks.  Today we remember that our lives forever changed on September 11, 2001.  As we honor the fallen, let’s be a little nicer today and try to carry on the same passion that was present immediately following the attacks.

Below is data from a CNN article that was released on September 7, 2015 about the attacks.
  • New York City: 2,753 killed
    • 343 NYC Fire Fighters
    • 23 NYC Police
    • 37 Port Authority
  • Washington DC: 184 killed
  • Flight 93: Shanksville, PA: 40 killed

DR Word Cloud:
Below is an example word cloud that we created using our 5 Core Values: Respect, Responsibility, Integrity, Independence, and Excellence.  The image below works similar to a Wordle, but the application used is called Tagul.  Our goal is for our students, parents, teachers, and community members to fill out this brief survey.  The survey will ask you to describe Dighton-Rehoboth Regional High School in 3 words.  A submission gives prominence to words that appear more frequently in the source text.  We will keep it open for this week and we will post our results next week.  Thank you for your participation!

First Welcome Back Night with Administrative Team:
September 16 @ 6:30 in Auditorium
This year the Administration will host a “Welcome Back Night” with parents and students.  During Welcome Back Night, the Administrative team will host a meeting in the Media Center to present the following:
  • 2015-2016 Expectations for students
  • Communication Plan: How to stay informed
  • Vision for 2015-2016
  • SIP Update
  • Security Protocols-ALICE
  • ***Mrs. Donahue will be available to register students for the PSAT test in October from 6:00-6:30 pm.  Please bring $25.00 cash to register your student***

We will not be having the traditional Open House this year with staff.  Due to feedback collected last year from students, parents, and community members, instead of meeting with teachers in September we will have two parent teacher conferences in October. The format would look like the following:

October 8th- Parent Teacher Conference 11:30-2pm (All families: A-Z)
October 8th- Parent Teacher Conference 6:00-8:30pm (Last name: A-K)
October 15th- Parent Teacher Conference 6:00-8:30pm (Last name: L-Z)

The Parent-Teacher Conferences scheduler will go live tentatively Monday, September 28th.  More information about scheduling Parent-Teacher Conferences will be coming soon.  As a result of our feedback collected last year, all conferences will be 10 minutes in duration.

Summer Reading:
Our students expired our summer reading title Dark Tide: The Great Molasses Flood of 1919 in classes this week.  Most teachers integrated the lesson into all subjects to demonstrate how one book connects several different genres.  From science classes analyzing molasses through a microscope, mock trials being conducted in history class regarding the case against the Unites States Industrial Alcohol Company (USIA), constructing scale models of the molasses tank in math class, and more! Our creative staff integrated over 20 lesson plans for multiple subjects that targeted each classroom.

On Monday, September 14th author of Dark Tide: The Great Molasses Flood of 1919 our summer reading book,  Stephen Puleo will be visiting DRRHS to go over the Dark Tide: The Great Molasses Flood of 1919 summer reading book.  We will have two separate assemblies:

  • Period 1: 7:30-8:30: Juniors/Seniors
  • Period 2: 9:00-10:00 Freshmen/Sophomores

We would like to extend this opportunity to all families to witness Mr. Puleo’s book discussion.  Any parent who would like to attend, should come in through the Superintendent’s Entrance (Dighton side).  There will be designated seating for parents.  There are two presentations: 7:30 am and 9:30 am.

Expectations for our audience:
  • Clean up after yourself or others
  • Use appropriate language and volume
  • Sit with your class
  • Respect peers, adults and school property.
  • Use electronics responsibly
  • Actively pay attention to the performance.
  • Ask appropriate questions
  • Politely applaud.

After Author Stephen Puleo has completed his presentation regarding Dark Tide: The Great Molasses Flood of 1919 students have the opportunity for questions and book signings.

Carpentry finishes our Student College Plaque:
On Thursday, Mr. Levesque and our Carpentry IV students finished our Student College Plaque which displays over 350 colleges our students have attended in the last ten years.  We are looking for a catchy title to our plaque.  If anyone has any ideas, please email Mr. Braga @ KBraga@drregional.org .
