This Week & The Week Ahead

Foreign Language Students Excel in National Testing
This spring students prepared for and took Language Exams competing with other students across the nation. This was the first year our students at DRRHS participated in national testing and we look forward to participating in the years to come.
Several students took the National Latin Exam in March, followed by the National Spanish and Portuguese exams in April.
We are extremely proud of our students and their achievements. They too should be proud of themselves for participating in this difficult testing. All students who participated will receive a certificate of participation in honor of their hard work.
Furthermore, we are happy to announce that several of our students scored above the national average and we would like to recognize these students.
The following Spanish students scored above the National Average:
  • Pat Newman (Level 4)
  • Sara Enos (Level 4)
  • Ashton Marshall (Level 3)
  • Megan Moran (Level 3)
  • Leslie Trevera (Level 3)
  • Maggie Hoye (Level 2)
  • Angelina Curtis (Level 2)
The following Latin students also scored above the National Average:
  • Kyle O’Connell (Cum Laude)
  • Hannah Barlow (Magna Cum Laude)
  • Emma Masse (Magna Cum  Laude)
  • Charles Pike (Maxima Cum Laude)
Lastly, Miss Leslie Trevera, Portuguese 2 student, received the top score in the nation on the National Portuguese Exam! Remarkable!!!
Big CONGRATULATIONS to all students for their accomplishments! We are extremely impressed with their achievements!

Math/Science Collaborative Project

The AP Physics and AP Calculus students were given the collaborative project to create a catapult.  A catapult is a medieval military weapon used to fire large missiles, such as stones and rocks, at the enemy and was designed using a high level of mathematical and engineering skills.

The students were given the following specifications to follow:

·         The catapult must have a base and a rotating arm that projects the ball as far as possible.

·         The ball must travel a minimum distance of 15 feet.

·         The release point on the catapult can be not higher than three feet above the ground level.

·         Each project must be constructed to withstand the force of firing the ball.  Therefore, durability will be judged.  Projects should remain intact upon firing the ball.

·         Each project must be presented with an overall theme.

·         If the ball is fired over 40 feet, the project will receive a 5 point bonus on their scoring.

·         During test firing of the projects, the team is responsible for collecting actual data from their catapult firings and then to derive position, velocity and acceleration functions for the flight of their projectile to complete the mathematics modeling component of the project.
