Getting to know the DRRHS Student-Parent Handbook-Attendance Policy

As part of our series “Getting to know the DRRHS Student-Parent Handbook” we will continue to highlight some key points of the Handbook.  This post will summarize our Attendance Policy.  For complete details, please see pages 36-38 of the handbook here.

Definitions:
Tardy: A student who is not in their classroom by 7:17 AM.
Absence: When a student is absent from first period, the teacher reports the student’s absence to the Main office.  A student must be present for a minimum of 3 classes in a day to be recorded present.  A student marked absent is not eligible to participate in after school or evening activities unless you have a legitimate excuse approved by administration.
Excused absence:  An absence that is documented by providing support in one of the following manners:
  •          Doctor’s note
  •          Bereavement
  •          Religious observance
  •          Professional appointments (i.e. court appointments)
  •          Field trips
  •         College visits- only with prior approval from Guidance counselor and administration

Unexcused absence:  Examples of unexcused absences: family vacation, suspension, lack of transportation, work, illness (unless proper and conclusive documentation is produced).
Dismissal:  Anytime a student leaves school before 1:51 PM.  A note from a parent is needed for dismissal.  Excused and Unexcused dismissals follow same guidelines as absences.

Saturday School: 8:00 AM – 12:00 PM.  Student is expected to come to school prepared to work.  Missing a Saturday school will result in a School Suspension and Community Service.

Students will receive a Saturday school for every 4 unexcused absences in a term.
Students will receive a Saturday school for every 5 unexcused tardies and/or dismissals (or combination of) in a term

NOTE:  Until Saturday School obligations are met, a student is not eligible to participate in extra-curricular activities, including athletics and driving to school.

Losing Privileges:
8 unexcused absences or tardies/dismissals in a semester will result in a student losing social and driving privileges for the remainder of the semester.  This includes membership on athletic teams and clubs, attendance at school sponsored events including the prom and other end of the year activities.
14 unexcused  tardies/dismissals in a semester will result with losing social and driving privileges for the year.

We open our doors at 6:45 in the morning. Come early and be ready to learn!
