This Week and the Week Ahead

On Thursday night we had the opportunity to honor and induct DR’s top students into the National Honors Society. In addition our student-athletes were back at it this week in anticipation for the beginning of the winter season next week.  The hallways after school are full of students whether they are playing sports or they are involved in activities like Peer Leaders, Student Government, Best Buddies, and the list continues.  We consistently encourage our students to take part in after school activities and this is the true high school experience.  If your child is not involved, but has been thinking of way to get involved, please contact Dean of Student Activities and Athletics Mr. Kelley.

National Honors Society:
On Thursday, Dighton Rehoboth Regional High School inducted 16 seniors and 27 juniors into the James F. Frates chapter of the National Honor Society.  These 43 students have earned a weighted 96.0 gpa or higher throughout their years at DRRHS.  In addition, they went through a rigorous application process in order to be admitted which included creating a portfolio to highlight the four pillars of the National Honor Society:  Scholarship, Service, Character, and Leadership.  Each year our inductees nominate a distinguished faculty member to serve as the key note speaker.  Mr. Kurt Loell was nominated to address the students and families for the second year in a row.
We are proud of these accomplished young men and women and welcome them into the James F. Frates Chapter of NHS.  The friends and family of inductees enjoyed the fine music of DR high school's very own Brandon Weddell's jazz ensemble, the Evolution Jazz Quartet.  Finally, at the end of the night, we congregated in the media center to celebrate these students with coffee and refreshments.  Congratulations inductees!

Election to Dighton-Rehoboth’s chapter of the National Honor Society, named the James A. Frates Chapter, is one of the school’s highest honors for students. Only juniors and seniors are eligible for membership. Election standards are based on elements of SERVICE, SCHOLARSHIP, LEADERSHIP, and CHARACTER.
First, students must meet a minimum cumulative weighted average of 96.0 at the end of the sophomore or junior year to be considered for membership These minimum cumulative averages are the standards that must be attained without the process of rounding off.
Academically eligible students, before election, then must compile a portfolio in which they document at least three examples of SERVICE and one area of LEADERSHIP. Each student is required to obtain three letters of CHARACTER reference, one of which must be from a member of the Dighton-Rehoboth faculty. The portfolios are judged by the Faculty Committee, who will make a decision of acceptance. The Faculty Committee evaluates students on these same characteristics each year.  Congratulations to the following 43 new members of NHS:

Unified Basketball Team:
The Unified Basketball team celebrated a great season on Monday night along with teams from Dartmouth and Durfee High School. The teams came together at White's of Westport for a banquet that featured guest speaker and former New England Patriot, Garin Veris. Mr. Veris spoke to the players and their families about the importance of sportsmanship and the bonds that exist between teammates. Players and guests enjoyed a delicious meal, recognition and thanks from their coaches, and a slideshow that included many memorable moments from the season. Thank you to all who attended and to everyone that had a part in making the 2016 season excellent!
In the Classroom:
  • Piano: Math teacher Sean Boisvert stopped by the Piano I class on Thursday to take a beginner lesson. He took a challenge and conquered "Jingle Bells" and "When the Saints Go Marching In" on his very first day. Way to go Mr. B!

This week's D-R News

Dean’s Desk:
  • Activities:
    • Portuguese Club: The Portuguese Club Coat drive will be extended to Wednesday December 7th. Please continue to bring lightly used coats to room 122 or the main office. So far we have had over 50 coats donated.
    • Latin Club: The Latin Club enjoyed going to Brown University Classics Department's 69th Latin Lessons and Carols on Monday night. Mrs. Loell was happy to report that this year's D-R group was the biggest group that has ever gone!  Lessons were read in Latin, Greek, and Sanskrit while the audience sang many Christmas carols in Latin. The all time favorite of the singing program was when the Chattertocks, Brown's oldest all-female a Capella group, sang "The Twelve days of Christmas" in Latin. It was not a nox silens but it was a nox sancta!
