Forensic students began a unit on Death: Meaning, Manner, Mechanism, Cause and Time. Today they discussed the meaning of death, that death is a process and that, in some cases, an examination (autopsy) may be needed to determine the manner of death. As a modeling activity, students performed autopsies in class today, on Dill Pickles. Students played the role of medical examiners and made observations of the "body's" exterior, then interior by making "Y" incisions starting at the shoulder area and proceding through sternum area, abdominal area to the pelvic area. Students then made drawings of superficial and deep layers of the body, examined "organs" , and looked for abnormalities. Microscopic examination of body tissues were performed and bodily fluids were collected and tested.
