DR Softball just Rollin along.

Dighton-Rehoboth senior Mia Iodice fired a one-hitter at the Cardinals and undefeated Dighton-Rehoboth posted a 5-0 South Coast Conference softball win.

SWANSEA – Maybe next time.

Case High was overmatched, plain and simple, on Friday at Brown School. Dighton-Rehoboth senior Mia Iodice fired a one-hitter at the Cardinals and undefeated Dighton-Rehoboth posted a 5-0 South Coast Conference softball win.

Iodice, who no-hit Bourne in her season pitching debut, flirted with a yet another no-hitter before Case’s Fallon Marchand narrowly legged out a two-out bunt single in the sixth inning. Iodice finished with 13 strikeouts and one walk.

“That’s the best pitcher we’ve seen all year,” Case coach Michaela Goncalves said. “Not having been outside a lot and we don’t have cages inside, we don’t get to see a lot of live (pitching) and we don’t want to fatigue our pitchers, either. We have a small pitching staff. So it’s hard to get the girls a lot of live at-bats.

“She’s a great pitcher. She has speed. She has movement. I think we battled hard. I don’t think we ever looked defeated at the plate. I think we looked hungry. But again, without all the experience we would need at this point to face a pitcher like that, she just did a great job overpowering our hitters.”

Allison Ainley, D-R’s No. 3 batter, went 4-for-4 with a home run, a solo rocket making it 2-0 in the fifth inning. The Falcons (9 hits, 8 left on base) added two more runs in the sixth and another in the seventh against Case’s complete-game pitcher Aubrey Carpenter.

Leadoff batter Calli Pratt was 2-for-4 with a run scored. Bailey Rassol, Lexi Lovell and Sienna Kulpa each lifted a sacrifice fly.

Iodice (bound for the University of New Haven) and co-ace Emily Reid (bound for University of Maine) form an extraordinarily formidable D-R pitching staff.

“Since I started coaching here with Dave Driscoll yearsand years ago, D-R has been blessed to have great pitchers,” Kulpa said. “I’m blessed the last couple of years to have two fantastic pitchers, not just one, two solid, solid pitchers. Right now we’re pretty much on an alternate basis and I’m going to keep it there for now.”

Though guilty of three errors, Case (2-2 overall and SCC) turned two double plays, including a 5-3-2 for an inning-ending out at home plate in the third with the score 1-0. D-R had opened the scoring in the first inning.

“Hats off to Case,” Kulpa said. “That team is solid defensively.”

D-R made two errors. In both instances, catcher Ainley promptly threw out the runner trying to steal second base.

Ainley’s line-drive home run took next to no time to clear the fence in left field. “She’s in the three hole because she can drive the ball,” Kulpa said.
